3 Hard Truths About MovingĂ‚ Up the Ladder at Work - The Muse

3 Hard Truths About MovingUp the Ladder at Work - The Muse3 Hard Truths About MovingUp the Ladder at WorkEarly in my career, all I ever wanted was to become a manager. I had my fair share of jobs outside my field, but landed my first real job as an editorial assistant after graduating college. It was my foot in the door to kick off my career, and all I knew was that I wanted to move up from there (even though I had no idea what that looked like outside of my head).Fast forward to a couple of roles later, I finally landed the coveted title of manager. However, my path to moving on up didnt turn out like Id imagined Instead of a steady climb up the ladder, it was more like an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course. There were some things I encountered that the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed version of me never considered and no one ever warned me about. If youre on the same path to becoming a leader, get ready to prepare for some of these things to happen. 1. Your Hold on Time Gets Trickie rThe reward for getting promoted is more work- point blank. I found out the hard way that as I moved higher up the ladder, other things went up, too. There are the positive things that increase, like your salary (cant be mad at that) and accomplishments to add to your portfolio (finally, youre getting noticed). But then there are other things that go up, like your weight, blood pressure, number of meetings, and tasks on your to-do list. Your days become longer, but somehow the time you have to get work done becomes shorter.I know this doesnt sound glamorous, so this is where I stress the importance of time management and prioritizing. Sometimes, itll mean coming in early. Other times, itll mean staying late. And then there are times when youll have to say, The work will be here tomorrow. You cant wish away the extra work, but you can decide how youre going to tackle it.2. Your Words Have More WeightSo here it is You have to speak up to get promoted, and then once youre in a higher r ole, you have to watch what you say. I found that the more visibility I gained, the more I had to measure my words all eyes are on you in ways they werent before. Its an interesting mix, because the carefree days of telling it like it is or water cooler talk with co-workers become limited (or at least less obvious). Yet, there will be times when you have to give into office politics more than youd like. And, youll have to make sure that your communication skills are on point and you dont come across as being condescending or negative- especially if you manage a team. You dont have to completely censor yourself just be more aware of what you say and how you say it. 3. Your Path Becomes Less ClearIts funny how your career comes full circle the closer you get to the top of the ladder. You collect so much experience that you may ask yourself, Whats my next career move? Your next step becomes less obvious (hello, ceiling?).This is where youll start to wonderAm I content at this point? Can I compete for other jobs? Will I have to wait for my manager to retire for a role to open?Do I even want my managers job?The best way to address these questions is to answer them honestly. If you continue to perform a pulse check as to where you want to go with your career, you wont feel stuck. Youll define your own path. With all the adjustments that came with moving up, I found that while my path could have gone any which way, my vision of what I wanted became clearer. It became more about the quality of life than the quantity of work, helping others shine rather than being in the spotlight, and listening more than talking.I dont think theres ever going to be a magic book that outlines everything to expect when you move up in your career. However, these three lessons are good to keep in mind as you do. Then again, if you knew what the future held, would it really change your direction? Something to think about.

How to Request LinkedIn Recommendations

How to Request LinkedIn RecommendationsHow to Request LinkedIn RecommendationsWhen you apply for a job through LinkedIn, you may see a post that says Applicants with recommendations are preferred. These are comments from other LinkedIn members. They describe what its like to work with you and recognize and commend you for work done. They appear alongside the positions they relate to on your profile, and hiring managers may view them as they would a job reference. The best way to get more LinkedIn recommendations is to ask for them, and there are multiple ways to go about doing so. Good recommendations show recruiters and prospective employers that it is worth their time to consider you for a position. The LinkedIn Recommendations Tool LinkedIn offers a tool for recommendations that can be accessed from your profile page or from the profile pages of those whose recommendations you seek. In the recommendations section of your own profile is a link labeled, Ask for a recommendation. Youll be prompted to list the names of the people you wish to ask and other details. From someone elses profile, click More at the top of their profile, then select Request a recommendation. Youll then be prompted to include other details about the request. Theres no limit to the number of recommendations a user can request. Personalized Messages LinkedIn autofills a generic message to send with your request. Personalize the message for a better response. This way, it wont seem as if youre spamming all your contacts in the hopes of a few good reviews. A personalized message shows you respect the contacts opinion, so you specifically chose them. Even better, first send your contact an email outside the platform to check if its OK to request a recommendation through the service. Youll increase the chances that your message is read. Many busy people ignore notifications they receive from the site. In the email, tactfully suggest points you want to be included in the recommendatio n. Reciprocal Recommendations If youre shy to approach a connection, take the initiative and write a recommendation for your contact without being asked. Thats an incentive for your connection to write one for you to return the favor. Most people are nice enough to reciprocate. Closest Colleagues Receive the best recommendations from the right people. Connections without a close working relationship with you cant offer concrete, honest feedback. The recommendation you receive from them may be generic and insincere. Ideal contacts to approach for recommendations include Colleagues youve worked closely with. Those who have seen your skills and expertise in action. Those who are comfortable recommending you. Those who can speak about a variety of your strengths. Remember, their words will appear on your profile, so what they write about your strengths must be accurate. Professionalism When you ask for a recommendation, make it clear that the recipient isnt under any obligation . Use words like if its not too much trouble, or when you have a chance. This communicates that you respect their time and that they are doing you a favor. This is a professional communication and should be treated as such. Context If the recommendation is for a specific position, direct the person to the job ad to provide him with context for the recommendation. Its another way to suggest the tone of the comments. Briefly, tell him why youre excited about the position or why youre the right fit for the job. Your enthusiasm may motivate him to write a stronger reference, and the specifics of the job can help him choose which attributes to praise. Content Suggestions Most times, people are eager to write comments, but no one wants to jeopardize someone elses opportunities. Your connections will appreciate guidance. For example, list the skills and attributes they could write about. You dont have to feed your contacts every word to say. Tell the person your successes and theyl l vouch for them. Did you work on a lucrative contract together? You could word your request If its not too much trouble, could you provide some comments on my wertmiger zuwachs during the XYZ contract that finished ahead of time and under budget? Follow-up Dont forget to thank the person for their comments. Theyll have taken time out of a busy schedule to fulfill your request. If youve approached someone you know is a go-to person for references and recommendations, a handwritten note or small gift may be appropriate. And if you havent done so already, write a recommendation in return.

A Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel Positions

A Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel PositionsA Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel PositionsIf youre familiar with law firms, youre probably familiar with associates and partners. Partners have an equity stake in the firmand run things. Associates work there and are paid as employees. Some, but not all, associates aspire to be partners, and the traditional BigLaw up or out system seems to have limited options for associates who arent made partner eventually. But, theres another platzdeckchen of options that are becoming increasingly popular, ?non-equity partners and of counsel positions. In this article, well talk about counsel positions.? What, you might wonder, is an of counsel position? Heres how the American Bar Association defines it Definition A part-time practitioner who practices law in association with a firm, but on a basis different from that of the mainstream lawyers in the firm. Such part-time practitioners are sometimes lawyers who have decided to change from full-time practice , either with that firm or with another, to a part-time one, or sometimes lawyers who have changed careers entirely, as for example former judges or government officials.A retired partner of the firm who, although not actively practicing law, nonetheless remains associated with the firm and available for occasional consultation. A lawyer who is, in effect, a probationary partner-to-be usually a lawyer brought into the firm laterally with the expectation of becoming apartner after a relatively short period of time.A permanent status in between those of partner and associate, having the quality of tenure, or something close to it, and lacking that of an expectation of likely versetzung to full partner status. Source Formal Opinion 90-357 of the American Bar Association For example, say you have an attorney in a firm who has excellent skills, but practices in an area thats not highly profitable (trusts and estates is a common example). Your clients sometimes need the attorneys expertis e, which is highly specialized but arent willing to pay a ton of money for it and dont need it most of the time. You dont want to send these clients elsewhere, for competitive reasons, but you also dont want to pay this marginally profitable attorney partner-level compensation. What to do? Make him of-counsel and pay him more than anassociate, but less than a partner. The advantage for the attorney is job security they know that theyre valued by the firm and wont be pushed out at the end of a certain number of years (as associates who dont make partner typically will be). Being of counsel, rather than a partner, is also an option for attorneys who prefer a more predictable, less time-intensive schedule. For many, the tradeoff of a substantially lower (but still high by any reasonable measure) salary for lower hours is a good one. People in this category could include attorneys returning to the firm after a stint in government, older attorneys interested in gradually downsizing the ir practice, and parents returning to the workplace who want a better work-life balance than being a law firm partner typically affords. The Downside of an of Counsel Position There are potentially several downsides to being of counsel rather than a partner. The most obvious is reduced pay. Attorneys who are of counsel will typically make a high associate salary, as opposed to the much higher average profits-per-partner. (Junior partners typically make much less than the average, but the upside potential of being a partner over time is much higher than being a salaried of-counsel.) Theres also a prestige hit to being of counsel. Although this may be offset by the downsides of actually having to do the job, saying youre a partner at a major law firm sounds impressive For many attorneys, however, the benefits of having an of-counsel position outweigh the downsides, and its a good mix of the steady income of associate life with the relative job security of partnership.

Government gives a shot in the arm to medical training

Government gives a shot in the arm to medical training Government gives a shot in the arm to medical trainingPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun The Governments recent announcement of significant increases to medical training places is welcome news for medical students, pre-vocational doctors and specialist trainees, as well as those aspiring to a future career in medicine. Over the next four years, the government is tischset to double to 1200 the number of training places for medical graduates to gain experience in general practice, increase from 360 to 900 the number of places for doctors to train as specialists and work in private, community and rural hospitals, and more than double the number of Pre-vocational General Practice Placements Program (PGPPP) places to 975. This announcement comes after recommendations were put forward by the Medical Training Review Panel (MTRP) emphasising the need for increased medical training places in both general practice and specialist areas. With the Commonwealths decision to double the number of medical school places, training bottlenecks were looming with medical schools struggling to find clinical placements for students but this new initiative will help to ease that bottleneck. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has pledged $632 million to training more than 6000 extra doctors and specialists over the next ten years. To maintain current levels of GP and primary care services alone it is estimated that an additional 3,000 GPs will be needed by 2020, said Mr Rudd. We believe the time for action has come. Dr Andrew Pesce, President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), has said that this announcement means that Australia will have more doctors in the system to care for an ageing bevlkerung with more chronic and complex health problems. This is a very strong investment in medical training and an acknowledgement by the government of the vital role that GPs will play in meeting the future health needs of the Australia n population, said Dr Pesce. Specialists will also be in demand and the increase in specialist training will help to address shortages in areas of need, such as general surgery, pathology, radiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, and dermatology.Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical)Study modeOnlinePayment optionsPayment planUpfront paymentEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMedical ResourcesSenior registered nurse sample resumeSenior registered nurse sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesAziza Sahib - Registered NurseSarah Key - Physiotherapist to the QueenInterested in becoming a?Chinese (Oriental) Medicine TherapistHealth ResearcherHealth Policy AdvisorHealth EducatorProduct DeveloperPopular Career Searchesgovernment funded enrolled nursing courses brisbanegovernment funded pathology courseenrolled nurse training nswdiploma of health science medical imaging distancegovernment funded nursing courses onlineMedical CoursesBachelor of Health SciencesEnquire Online Enquire On lineBachelor of Science (Biomedical Science)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Health AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Allied Health AssistanceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJosie ChunRelated ArticlesBrowse moreHealthNursingCritical health problem in nursing jobsFor well over two decades there have been warnings of a looming crisis in the health-care system due to the ageing population and significant workplace shortages.CAREER INSPIRATIONCareer progressionHow To Future Proof Your CareerWill your job as you know it exist in a decade from now? A professor explains why networking is a waste of time

A professor explains why networking is a waste of timeA professor explains why networking is a waste of timeCollege freshmen are lectured about it on their first day of class. Young professionals race to one more boring party so they can be seen and shake hands with someone that might be able to help them - just like the geschftsleben books and podcasts have instructed. Young musicians are chronically obsessed and depressed with their number of likes, views, and followers on their social media.Today, for almost any definition of success we might identify, there is one common path to achieve it that is being shoved down ur throats. That road to success is called networking. Networking is defined as the cultivation of relationships that can help us advance or move to a higher position. The message gained from this is that anything valuable in life which involves relationships - be it geschftlicher umgang, marriage, charity work or entertainment is only attainable by networking. There are serious problems with this single path to success. Of curse, we do need others - real relationships and collaboration are so important. So how can we cultivate those, and bypass all the ineffective networking garbage? The answer is serving.Martin Luther King, Jr. said Anybody can be great because anybody can serve. Even music business super-manager, Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber) says Dont live for yourself. That is too easy. You will gain nothing from that endeavor. Live for othersThat is where you will find true riches in life.See, the heart of networking is rooted in selfishness, taking and using while the great leaders all teach us that true success comes through serving - giving generously and loving others without reservation. So what happens when you focus on serving instead of networking? Here are five key things1. Serving erases conflictWhen your work is done with care, compassion, and humility - conflict evaporates. As a music business attorney, I sometimes find mysel f in tough negotiations with some pretty arrogant attorneys who cause our dealings to turn heated and get personal. Many of them tower over me with wealth, intellect and recognition- so it can be easy to get intimidated. But I have learned over the years to respond to them by serving, not by throwing more heat on the fire or putting on my boxing gloves. Humility, genuine interest, and compassion for my opponent are the mighty equalizers. With those, my heart changes toward them - their heart changes toward me - and the logjam is supernaturally removed - often immediately.2. Serving creates purposeWhen you work is centered on others - purpose is found. When my son Harrison turned 16, we handed down to him my Black 1989 sortiment Rover that we affectionately call The Beast - and he and I started talking about potential summer jobs that would help him pay for his gas and other costs. I began naming a few places he could apply Chic-fil-A? Boring. How about that new Publix? That wo uld be really boring. How about the Juice Bar. Nah, kind of boring. Finally, I stopped him. OK, enough with the boring. I want to help you get a fresh vision and purpose for your first job. You must see this first job (and every job) as a place to serve others - not as a place for you to get your emotional needs met. If you ask the question, where is a place that is filled with people that need me and need my gifts - then step into that place desiring to bring life and joy to customers and co-workers - then you will have true purpose that enables you to get through the tough days at any job. Its important to remember There is no dream job, but serving can create purpose and contentment that can make the most difficult job feel like a dream. Oh, by the way, he nailed a job at Starbucks3. Serving creates value for you and for othersWe live in a world where you can be famous for being famous. The popularity of social media faces like the Kardashians is misleading us. What have they created? What value have they brought to the world? So, its easy to buy into the promise that If you want to attract new clients, or build something, you have to make yourself visible. A few years ago I booked a flight to Austin to spend a week at the South By Southwest music festival - hundreds of bands - with my sole purpose of finding new band clients. I spent loads of money, handed out lots of business cards, shook hands and met so many people. I came back to Nashville and never received one single new client from that trip. What happened? On reflection, I realized I missed so many opportunities to love and serve others that week, because my focus was only on me, my needs, my business, not on the needs, brokenness, and businesses of those with whom I was rubbing shoulders. You see I was trying to make myself visible, SERVING is about making ourselves available. Giving Value Lasts.4. Serving creates provision for you and for othersServing gives and attracts while Networking tak es and repels. The Best Marketing Plan for your product or business comes through genuine love, generosity, and care for others. When you build relationships on those themes - without strings attached - you open up a stream of provision that flows both ways. I have given free legal work to a client who could not afford to pay and then watched him become my highest billing client a few years later. This is a spiritual principle on which you can stake your business, your relationships, your life. It never fails. The world calls it karma, but God calls it planting and harvesting.5. Serving changes the world because it changes othersWe all want to leave a mark. But sometimes our dreams seem so out of reach - they are beyond our education, beyond our age, abilities, resources and our networks. What is the key? Start small. When I start getting frustrated with my impact on the college campus where I teach, my wife Carol always reminds me Its one student at a time. Find someone who is l onely - someone hurting - shine a light on that person. Just change one. Then do it again. You dont need a license to change someone, you just need to care.In a world filled with hate and disconnection, SERVING astounds the world. A few months ago, the comedian Sarah Silverman did just that. She had a Twitter troll lash out at her with a strong hate remark. Instead of ignoring his bait or fighting back, she publicly tweeted back with compassion and concern for his emotional needs and back pain. Their conflict evaporated. And thanks to Sarahs response, in short order, there were doctors lined up to help treat this mans back disease.Life moves pretty fast. We must make every conversation count.Be real. Be truthful. Be sensitive to the needs of others Our days are limited.Mark H. Maxwell is the author of the new book Networking Kills Success Through Serving. He is also an entertainment attorney, music business veteran and college professor. Maxwell is passionate about serving as a mentor to the next generation of creatives and entertainment business professionals. He lives in Nashville with his wife and children.A professor explains why networking is a waste of timeCollege freshmen are lectured about it on their first day of class. Young professionals race to one more boring party so they can be seen and shake hands with someone that might be able to help them - just like the business books and podcasts have instructed. Young musicians are chronically obsessed and depressed with their number of likes, views, and followers on their social media.Today, for almost any definition of success we mig ht identify, there is one common path to achieve it that is being shoved down our throats. That road to success is called networking. Networking is defined as the cultivation of relationships that can help us advance or move to a higher position. The message gained from this is that anything valuable in life which involves relationships - be it business, marriage, charity work or entertainment is only attainable by networking. There are serious problems with this single path to success. Of course, we do need others - real relationships and collaboration are so important. Live for othersThat is where you will find true riches in life.Follow Ladders on Fl ipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSee, the heart of networking is rooted in selfishness, taking and using while the great leaders all teach us that true success comes through serving - giving generously and loving others without reservation. So what happens when you focus on serving instead of networking? Here are five key things1. Serving erases conflictWhen your work is done with care, compassion, and humility - conflict evaporates. As a music business attorney, I sometimes find myself in tough negotiations with some pretty arrogant attorneys who cause our dealings to turn heated and get personal. That would be really boring. I spent loads of money, handed out lots of business cards, s hook hands and met so many people. Serving creates provision for you and for othersServing gives and attracts while Networking takes and repels. This is a spiritu al principle on which you can stake your business, your relationships, your life. Find someone who is lonely - someone hurting - shine a light on that person. Just change one. Then do it again. You dont need a license to change someone, you just need to care.In a world filled with hate and disconnection, SERVING astounds the world. A few months ago, the comedian Sarah Silverman did just that. She had a Twitter troll lash out at her with a strong hate remark. Instead of ignoring his bait or fighting back, she publicl y tweeted back with compassion and concern for his emotional needs and back pain. How to make $1,000,000 doing absolutely nothing

How to make $1,000,000 doing absolutely nothingHow to make $1,000,000 doing absolutely nothingJennifer Aniston just made over a million dollars doing nothing.Only one word in that sentence is debatable. That word is not nothing. Its just.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhen I say just, I mean last December. Toward the end of 2018 Netflix renewed its agreement to air the show Friends. The price tag on that agreement? $100 million. To we viewers, it will appear as if nothing happens. We keep rolling Friends to put us to sleep at night, or at the very least, watch the thumbnail on the trending now row rotate between Rachel in a skimpy negligee to hottemax in a skimpy Frankie Say Relax T-Shirt.Behind the scenes, each of the six stars of Friends watch another $1.4 million fall into their already-crammed bank accounts.Ca-ching.I dont talk about this a lot. I should. At the end of the da y, it is nice to disappear into creative land. It is nice to have a hobby or a job you enjoy. It is nice to chase art for the sake of art.It is also nice to make money.David, Courtney, Lisa, Matthew, Matt, and sweet Jennifer of Friends fame are all cashing in 7 figures not because of what they are doing now, but because ofcreative work they did in the past which reached the right audience. They have, as my business friends would say, an asset.Quickly, here are some other assets I can think of real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, equity in a business.Look the list of assets together and answer this question Which one doesnt seem to fit in?Real estateStocks or bondsMutual FundsEquity in a businessCreative Property**You lawyers can go ahead and say intellectual property. Now answer this question which of these assets feels fruchtwein accessible to you?All these things (with the proper care) grow over time and pad your financial health. Only one of them can be started with absolutely zero cash up front.Heres an example In 2016, I released an ebook. A friend did the cover for free. Another friend did the formatting for free. I asked a few thousand followers (which were also not paid for) to buy the book. The gut-wrenching price I charged? 99 cents.Out of those thousands of people, only 120 bought. I used that money to buy a microphone. The microphone and I retreated to the basement, where we recorded my audio book. This is where it gets fun.In 2016, the audio book made $200.In 2017, the audio book made $742.33.In 2018, the audio book made $2,060.97.In 2019, the audio book has made $596.16.If I stay on pace, the book will make somewhere around $3,500 this year.Which is nice, considering I only thought of it once in the last 18 months. But Todd, Audible/Amazon could change their algorithmSure. And Netflix could refuse to renew Friends. And the stock market could crash tomorrow. And, and, and.But Todd, the people from Friends have way more exposure thanme. In Belgium, there lives a musician named Angle who has 427,000 Youtube subscribers.Have you heard of her? No. Her songs are mostly in French.Everyone is a nobody to somebody. But Todd, you have a talent in writing.Talent? Maybe. I do have theskillof writing. All it cost me welches 1,000,000+ words on hard drives and clouds. But Todd, I just cant make a living from creatingart. Why? Because someone told you it is impossible?A long time ago, somebody told me that too.But today, all the money I make is a direct result of things I make up in my brain. And it all started with a little book.Even, then, I had no idea where that one book would lead. I just listened to a close friend who told me these wordsStart today.Start now.Much love as always ?This article first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double yo ur productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
